One of the great things about buying a new-build home is that you are starting with a blank canvas, so you have a real opportunity to make your home and garden your own.
These are our garden ‘must-haves’ to ensure you can really enjoy your garden this summer:
• Plants and flowers
Surround yourself with bright colours for a feel-good factor and provide a welcoming, relaxing environment. Bring your plants onto your decking or patio using tubs, planters and hanging baskets to add more colour.
• Fences
A recent trend is to decorate fence panels, that aren’t covered by plants and bushes, by hanging colourful ornaments, beautifully painted bird boxes and even rustic picture frames to them. If you have an artistic streak or you’re open to employing the services of a local artist, painted murals can look fantastic along the fence panels.
• Patio furniture
It’s important to get a mix of practical yet comfortable furniture so you can enjoy sitting outside that is comfortable and low maintenance. Chairs with removable covers are great; you can wash the covers to keep them looking, feeling and smelling fresh. Rattan furniture is a perfect blend of affordability and durability. Another tip to think about before you buy, is where you’re going to store the furniture in winter – do you have a garage or shed big enough?
• Lighting and heating
Think fire-bowls, fire-pits and chimineas to allow you to stay outside that little bit longer and add a touch of romance with candles (Citronella candles will keep the midges away), lanterns or dramatic Tiki Torches. You can also store a pile of cosy blankets close by for extra warmth too.
